Alexander Bauer is a postdoctoral researcher in the machine learning group at TU Berlin and a member of BASLEARN, the Berlin based joint lab of BASF and TU Berlin for machine learning. He received his doctorate in natural sciences (Dr. rer. nat.) from the TU Berlin in 2017. In his earlier research years, he was working on the general task of prediction with structured outputs, that is, a supervised branch of machine learning, where the outputs of a corresponding prediction function are interdependent structured objects like sequences, trees or graphs. Today, his focus has shifted towards applications of deep neural networks, in particular, in the area of computer vision and natural language processing. Prior to his current position, he has been actively involved as an independent researcher in development of deep learning based solutions for various image processing tasks including image classification, object detection, semantic segmentation and visual anomaly detection to support quality assurance in the automotive industry. In addition to computer vision, he is interested in the field of natural language processing with focus on transformer architectures and related concepts of foundation models for transfer learning towards various downstream tasks including topic classification, textual entailment, document summarization, questions answering, and general task of natural language understanding.
